The recent series of works explore the inspirational forces of nature and music on the artist’s creativity. The large scale oil paintings depict imaginative landscapes, which are created by using commonly familiar elements in nature in order to present the viewer with a unique, imagined vision of the world.
The intense study and influence of various masters ranging from Monet, Chagall and Kandinsky to Soutine and Bonnard led me to a personal vision, rich with substance, content, and technical mastery. The combination of abstract nuances and a symbolist approach represent a convergence between three major concerns, the mastery of painting technique, the formulation of a language, and reinterpretation of the realms of the subconscious.
The body of works from the past two years aims to, one way or another, revisit nature and place emphasis on emotion as a significant guiding force in the aesthetic experience. In many ways, it is an examination of the instance of sublimity, an encounter with the spiritual self through the contemplation and inspiration from nature. Ultimately, my attempt is to harmonize with paint and make music with color.
In my painting process I work from photographs taken over an extended number of days as well as from memory, constantly abstracting familiar features of a specific site. The aim is to have each image achieve visual and emotive force. This composing and re-imagining of specific places is what forms the creative method that leads to a better understanding of myself. These works are created by using commonly familiar elements in nature in order to present the viewer with a unique, visually reinterpreted vision of a landscape.
